The Sunday Standard: Speaking Life – The Power of the Tongue (Part 1)
Share
Happy Sunday, family. It’s Thursday, March 12, 2026, and as I sit here reflecting on how far we’ve come with the FOCUS Movement, I’m struck by how much more there is to learn. If you know me, Yolanda Newell, you know I’m always aiming to be "Highly Favored," but let’s be real: I’m a work in progress just like anyone else. I don't know if I will ever master the art of perfect speech. Probably not. But what I do know is that we are called to a higher standard.
Today marks the beginning of something new. We’re launching a series called "Speaking Life." This isn't just another blog category; it’s the next evolution of what we do here at FOCUS-I-APPAREL. For a long time, we’ve focused on what we wear: the visual message. But now, I want us to look at what we say. If we’re going to be Walking Billboards for the Kingdom, our mouths have to match our chests.
Introduction: The Evolution of FOCUS
When we first started the FOCUS Movement, the goal was simple: provide high-quality I-Shirts and I-Products that allowed people to wear their faith out loud. We wanted to make sure that when you walked into a room, your presence said something about who you serve before you even opened your mouth.
But as the movement has grown, I’ve realized that the "opening your mouth" part is where the real battle happens. We can wear the most beautiful inspirational-shirt-premium-heavyweight-long-sleeve-shirt-focus in the world, but if the words coming out of our mouths are full of bitterness, doubt, or gossip, we’re sending a mixed message.
The Speaking Life series is about aligning our internal reality and our external speech with the garments we choose to put on. It’s about understanding that our words have weight. They have gravity. And most importantly, they have power.
The Weight of a Word
We’ve all heard the old saying, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." Honestly? That might be the biggest lie ever told. Bones heal. You put a cast on them, wait six weeks, and you’re back in the game. But words? Words can stay with you for decades. A word spoken in anger by a parent, a careless comment from a spouse, or a judgmental remark from a friend can shape the way we see ourselves for the rest of our lives.
The Bible doesn’t play around when it comes to the tongue. The foundational principle for this entire series comes from Proverbs 18:21: "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
Think about that for a second. Death and life.
We aren't just talking about being "nice" or "polite." We are talking about the literal power to build or destroy. When we speak, we are planting seeds. Eventually, those seeds are going to grow, and we: and the people around us: are going to have to eat the fruit. Is the fruit you’re producing sweet, or is it bitter?

The Tongue: A Small Part with a Big Impact
In our research and through our study of the Scriptures, we see a recurring theme: the tongue is small, but its influence is massive. Throughout history, we’ve seen the tongue used to change the direction of nations, to stir up passions for good, and to incite unspeakable evil.
James 3 compares the tongue to a small rudder on a huge ship. Even though the ship is massive and driven by strong winds, it’s steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Your life is that ship. Your tongue is the rudder. You might feel like the winds of life: the economy, your health, your relationships: are the things in control, but Scripture suggests that your words are actually steering the vessel.
Are you steering yourself toward a life of "Highly Favored" outcomes, or are you steering yourself into the rocks of negativity? It’s easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment and let a "sword thrust" of a word fly out (Proverbs 12:18a). I’ve done it. We’ve all done it. But as we grow in the FOCUS Movement, we have to become more intentional stewards of our speech.
The Walking Billboard Concept
At FOCUS-I-APPAREL, we talk a lot about being a Walking Billboard. When you put on one of our I-Hoodies or an I-Cap, you are making a public declaration. You are telling the world, "I am focused on God. I am inspired. I am living with purpose."
But here’s the challenge: what happens when the "billboard" starts talking?
If your shirt says "FOCUS" but your words say "I’m so worried, I don’t know how I’m going to make it," there is a disconnect. If your embroidered-inspirational-beanie is sitting on a head that is currently formulating a plan to "tell someone off," we’ve missed the mark.
Our speech should match the message we wear. This doesn’t mean we have to be perfect or that we can’t be honest about our struggles. Authentic faith is about being real. But there is a difference between being real about a struggle and letting that struggle dictate the "death" you speak over your situation. Speaking life means acknowledging the mountain but declaring the power of the One who can move it.

The Heart and Speech Connection
One of the most critical lessons we can learn about the power of the tongue is that it doesn’t work in a vacuum. Jesus taught us in Luke 6:45 that "out of the abundance of the heart [the] mouth speaks."
If you find yourself struggling with what you’re saying, the tongue isn't actually the primary problem: the heart is. The tongue is just the delivery system. If the water coming out of the tap is dirty, you don't just clean the faucet; you look at the source.
To speak life, we have to fill our hearts with life. We have to guard our hearts by filling them with God’s Word. This is why we created I-Products like the I-Mug. It’s not just a cup; it’s a morning reminder while you’re having your coffee and reading your Word. It’s a tool to help you set your focus for the day so that when the world tries to squeeze you, what comes out of you is grace, truth, and life.
Gracious words are described in Proverbs 16:24 as "a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body." I want our community to be known for that kind of sweetness. In a world that is so loud, so angry, and so divisive, imagine the impact of a movement of people who intentionally choose to speak life.
Consistency: The Sunday Standard
While many people think of "The Sunday Standard" as how we act at church, I want to flip that. To me, the Sunday Standard is about carrying the peace, the focus, and the intentionality of a Sabbath rest into every single day of the week.
It’s about consistency.
James 3:10 points out the inconsistency we often fall into: "Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so." You can’t have salt water and fresh water coming from the same spring.
If we are going to represent the FOCUS brand and, more importantly, the Kingdom of God, we have to strive for consistency. We want our words on Monday morning in traffic to be just as life-giving as our words on Sunday morning in the pews. It’s a tall order, I know. I’m right there in the trenches with you. But this is why we call it a movement. We are moving together toward a better version of ourselves.

Apparel as a Tool for the Journey
As we continue this series, I want to remind you that the clothing we offer at FOCUS-I-APPAREL is meant to be a tool for this journey.
When you’re wearing an inspirational-shirt-long-sleeve-i-shirt, let it be a physical reminder to guard your heart and your tongue. Let the feeling of the fabric against your skin be a prompt to check your words before they leave your lips.
Are you building someone up today?
Are you speaking life over your children?
Are you declaring God’s promises over your finances, even when the bank account looks low?
We have the power to change the atmosphere of our homes and our workplaces simply by changing the way we talk. It’s one of the most accessible forms of spiritual authority we have, and yet it’s often the one we overlook the most.
Conclusion: Part 1 of the Journey
This is just the beginning of our exploration into Speaking Life. Throughout this series, we’re going to get into the nitty-gritty of how to practically change our speech patterns, how to overcome the habit of complaining, and how to use our words to manifest the "Highly Favored" life God has for us.
We are called to be intentional. We are called to be different. We are called to be a light in a dark world, and that light starts with the "spark" of our words.
I’m excited to go on this journey with you. It’s going to be challenging, and we’re probably going to have to face some uncomfortable truths about how we’ve been using our "rudders," but I know the fruit on the other side is going to be worth it.
Come walk with me. Let's commit to being people who speak life, one word at a time.
Stay focused, family.
